Its context is the encounter of the burning bush (Exodus 3:14): Moses asks what he is to say to the Israelites when they ask what God has sent him to them, and Yahweh replies, "I am who I am," adding, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'I am has sent me to you.'" ’Ehyeh is the first person form of hayah, "to be", and owing to the peculiarities of Hebrew grammar means both "I am", "I was", and "I will be".
This should help you understand the Old Testament better. This is how He explained Himself to those Hebrews. He never gave them His name. They knew Him by what His titles meant. We are truly blessed that He has shared His name with us. We now have a great advantage over those Hebrews. The scriptures tell us to do all things in His name. Jesus! We are baptized in His name. We are healed in His name. We have Victory in His name. Never take that precious name for granted.
