Not In The Chariot Of Fire!
By Mark Flippo
Fifty men from the company of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had stopped at the Jordan. Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.
“You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two. -2 Kings 2:7-12
Are you surprised that he did not go up in the chariot? When we do not take time to read the scriptures for ourselves we can believe a lie. Most teachers and pastors who teach that he went up in a chariot are just repeating what they have heard. Well meaning people just repeat tradition. We are encouraged to read the scriptures for ourselves.
Psalm 119:105 ESV
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
1 Timothy 4:13 ESV
Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.
2 Timothy 2:15 ESV
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
Just because it has been preached from the behind the pulpit, it does not mean it is absolute Truth. Study what has been brought before you. It is not wrong or a sin to find out from God if what you hear is correct.
