Puah and Shiphrah
By Mark Flippo
Puah and Shiphrah were in charge of all the Hebrew midwives in Egypt while Israel was enslaved in Egypt. One day, Pharaoh called Puah and Shiphrah to him and told them, ‘When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live’ (Exodus 1:16). But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them, but let the boys live (Exodus 1:17).
Puah and Shiphrah had no idea their courageous act would lead to the redemption of Israel from slavery. The only thing these midwives knew was that Pharaoh was asking them to do something that would displease God and they feared and respected God more than Pharaoh.
These nurses changed the course of history! They did the right thing even though they were ordered to do evil. Have you ever been given instructions to do something you felt was wrong? Did you follow your heart or did you fulfill that command? I was faced with that same situation and I chose not to follow instructions. I talked to my bosses about it and explained my feelings. They did not like it but they allowed me to not be involved in that situation. Eventually they stopped doing this type of work. Just make sure your attitude is right before the LORD! Seek Him first for the answer if you should follow orders or not.
