Mary And Martha
By Marian Flippo
Luke 10:38-42 (KJV)
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Mary was in a state of complete spiritual concentration, totally absorbed in hearing and receiving the Word of God. She was really not trying to avoid her normal responsibilities, but perceived that what was being said by the Master was more important than daily activities. However, Martha was tending to her serving obligations but there was resentment because she felt she was working the hardest and she wanted help.
Instead of doing her task cheerfully, she began resenting Mary's lack of work more.
She was losing sight of the real purpose of service, to give it in love. Martha was thinking about herself more than the needs of others (her sister). We have all had times when we fail to understand correctly what being a servant is. It is to put the welfare of another over oneself. In this time we are living, love and support is needed more than ever. May we all come to full maturity in Christ and love one another more than ourselves.
