Generally, water flows in the reverse direction where rivers are emptied into a larger water body due to tidal wave and this phenomenon is natural. Sometimes rivers flow in both the directions due to change in the course of river, but it takes thousands of years to change course of a healthy river.
But in spring 2016, a period of intense melting of the glacier meant the drainage gradient was tipped in favour of a second river, redirecting the meltwater to the Gulf of Alaska, thousands of miles from its original destination.
The Hudson River is known for flowing both ways, a phenomenon referred to as bifurcation. The river's Native American name, Muhheakantuck, means "river that flows both ways"
