Acts 27:19-20 15-23
By Mark Flippo
Acts 27:19-20 describes a situation where a ship was battered by a storm for three days. On the third day, they threw the ship's equipment overboard with their own hands. When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, they finally gave up all hope of being saved.
14 But not long after there, arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.
Cyclonic tempestuous northeast wind
Euroclydon (or in Latin: Euroaquilo) is a cyclonic tempestuous northeast wind which blows in the Mediterranean, mostly in autumn and winter. It is the modern Gregalia (Gregale) or Levanter.
15 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.
16 And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:
17 Which when they had taken up, they used helps (helps was something to help the ship) undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksand's, strake sail, and so were driven.
21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.
22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship.
23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,
Wow, is this ever a lesson! If you do not listen to God trying to get your attention to save you some grief, disaster will come. Paul disobeyed and ran head long into those cyclone winds. God's Grace is the only thing that saved him and the rest of those on the ship. He endured a cyclone and a snake bite. He was gathering wood for a fire. Fire often means a purging; did he ever need that.
All the people on the Island where they washed up were very kind to them. You need to understand even at your worst Jesus will surround you with kind people to help you make it through your trial. Would you like to go through all he went through because of his rebellion? Pay attention and obey your Heavenly Father. Learn to understand His impression and just ('DO IT')
